The RIVIGO Way of Life

7 August 2018

Ten leadership principles that are akin to the DNA of people at RIVIGO. The note talks about how these principles embody our spirit and guide our actions.

Our foundation at RIVIGO is rooted in a strong core of a purposeful mission and ten deeply-embedded leadership principles. Everyone at RIVIGO is unstintingly connected to our pursuit of ‘making logistics human’. This thorough connectedness has built a team that is impassioned and conscientious. The leadership principles, on the other hand, are akin to the DNA of all of us at RIVIGO as they define our way of life and govern our actions in all moments of truth.

A wonderful thing about these principles is that while these have been defined in RIVIGO’s context, fundamentally these really are just ‘life leadership principles’. If one imbibes these fully, their impact is not limited to RIVIGO alone, but extends to all pursuits in life.

RIVIGO Leadership Principles (RLPs) are an embodiment of our way of life. They define who we are and what we aspire to be as an organization. Over time, they have set the course for all our work — be it hiring, talent management, business reviews or external partner evaluation. These principles bind us and govern our way of working across teams and locations.

Right from the time someone is hired at RIVIGO, RLPs are at the forefront. The decision to hire is not governed by the individual’s skills or experience. It is governed by his/her likelihood of scaling up here as indicated by the RLPs. Our interviewers focus not on the ‘what’ of a person’s experience but the ‘how’ of it. ‘Manthan’, our hiring decision huddles, are a critical moment of truth where interviewers discuss and debate the long-term scalability of the individual at RIVIGO. This is based on their assessment of his/her intrinsic alignment to the RLPs. Our hiring process is where the RLP flywheel initiates for us.

RLPs are also core to an individual’s success at RIVIGO. Hence, our personal development philosophy is also deeply rooted in these principles. Everyone’s development agenda is articulated only using this framework. This is because of a very interesting peculiarity of the underlying tenet of the RLPs – that none of these are skill-based, but choice-based. Whether you’re an individual contributor or a team manager, whether you’re at our 100th pitstop or at the headquarters, you have a choice. The choice is to be a leader at RIVIGO. The only way to lead at RIVIGO is to fully imbibe the RLPs.

The RLPs are embodied deeply across everything else as well. It is not uncommon to overhear people casually conversing in the RLP-language – “Let’s nail this project with full ownership, solving problems for tomorrow; My say/do ratio dropped by 20% this week; Let’s not use intuition, but rely on data; I will not hire because the person was not better than me.” Daily team huddles, business reviews and external partner evaluation too – all happen keeping the RLPs as the governing principles.

Since our inception, there have been innumerable moments of truth where the RLPs have guided us. The RLPs have undergone several tests themselves. We know that these principles must be constantly evaluated for relevance in a highly dynamic and volatile environment like ours. We have periodically reviewed these and updated any principle that did not make as much sense or added one that felt right in the context of the day.

Below are our ten leadership principles, last updated in January 2018.

  • Ownership – I am an owner, not an employee. I act on behalf of the entire company.
  • Hire Better People – I hire people better than myself. I mentor and coach to make them better.
  • Technology Obsession – I use technology to solve problems. I always ask how technology can bring efficiency or reduce effort in whatever I do.
  • Data Driven – I like to get into depth. I like to measure everything through numbers and believe it is the only source of truth.
  • Boundless Energy – I deeply connect with my source of energy every day and bring that energy to everything I do in life.
  • Think Big – I think big. I think bold. I don’t say no to challenges and don’t fear failures.
  • 1% Improvement Everyday – I constantly better myself and my work every day. I believe in learning from mistakes to ensure I do not repeat them.
  • Respectfully Disagree & Commit – I respectfully challenge the decisions of my team members when I have a better solution.
  • Frugality – I am sensitive to wastage and inefficiency. I don’t overspend. I am resourceful.
  • Say / Do = 100% – I do what I say. Not less. It helps me build a cycle of trust with everyone around me.
